Goh Beng Kwan: Time & Again

Known for his pivotal role in shaping modern art history in Singapore, Goh Beng Kwan (b.1937) masterfully blends Oriental lyricism and Western abstract expressionism aesthetics in his oeuvre. While much has been said of his ‘oriental approach’ to his collages, less is known of his contemporary ink and innovative approach to his mixed media works. Born in 1937, Goh and his contemporaries persevered and created art that reflects their cultural experiences and identities amidst the challenges of rapid urbanisation in mid-20 th century Singapore. ‘Time and Again’ celebrates Goh’s resilience and strength as a Southeast Asian artist, showcasing over 50 works from the 1960s to the present that demonstrate his aptitude in colours and composition, highlighting versatility and consistency in his art practice alluding to the spirit of the time in which they were created. Revealed for the first time is a series of work he produced at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, titled ‘New Era’. This new body of work marks a new phase for the artist and calls for a reflection of our city’s resilience and adaptability in the face of change and a renewed sense of perspective in the new world.
